Worked example: a 12 oz bag against a recipe for 1 ½ cups

  1. Bag weight: 12 oz × 28.35 g per oz = 340 g.
  2. Recipe weight: 1.5 × 170 g = 255 g.
  3. What is left in the bag: 340 g − 255 g = 85.2 g.
  4. That leftover is 0.5 cup, about ½ cup.
  5. Scale the recipe to a double batch and you need 510 g, which is 170 g more than one bag.

Bag size is the easy shortcut

A 12 oz bag is a common size for chocolate chips. Twelve ounces is 12 × 28.35 g = 340 g, which is 2 cups of standard chips. Half a bag is 170 g, or 1 cup. If a cookie recipe says "one bag", you can often save yourself the measuring altogether.

Standard, mini and chunks

A cup of standard chips is 170 g; minis are 177 g, 7 g more, since the smaller pieces fill the gaps. Chunks and chopped bars are the opposite: they leave larger spaces and weigh less by the cup, so a recipe that gives chunks in cups can be off by a handful of grams if you use chips instead. No published cup weight for chunks is in the dataset, so weigh them.

How much chocolate is too much

Most cookie doughs take between 1 cup and 2 cups of chips per batch: from 170 g to 340 g. More than that and the dough struggles to hold together; less and you lose the melted-pocket effect. For muffins and pancakes, a ½ cup (85 g) is plenty.

Chips versus cocoa and chopped bars

Don't confuse chips with cocoa powder, which is a fine powder at 84 g per cup. Chocolate chips also contain stabilisers meant to hold their shape in the oven, so melting them for ganache may give a thicker result than melting a chopped bar of the same weight.

Chips in other recipes

Muffins and quick breads take about ½ cup to 1 cup, which is 85 g to 170 g. A quarter cup is 42.5 g, or 4 tablespoons, enough to dot a batch of pancakes.

Chips in ounces

US chocolate is often packaged in ounces, so it helps to know that one cup of chips is 6 oz. A half cup is 3 oz and two cups is 12 oz. Recipes asking for "6 ounces of chocolate chips" therefore mean one cup.
