The gallon, quart, pint, cup trick

A gallon holds 4 quarts, each quart holds 2 pints, and each pint holds 2 cups, so a gallon is 4 × 2 × 2 = 16 cups. Every cup is 8 fluid ounces, which is where the 128 comes from. See how many ounces in a cup for the cup itself.

US and UK gallons are different sizes

The US and UK use the same names and the same ratios: 4 quarts to the gallon, 2 pints to the quart. The sizes differ. A UK gallon is 4.546 L, about 20% more than the US gallon's 3.785 L, so a UK pint is 568.3 ml where a US pint is 473.2 ml.

The fluid ounce runs the other way: an imperial fl oz is 28.41 ml, a little smaller than the US fl oz (29.57 ml). That is why a UK gallon holds 160 of its own fluid ounces but only 153.7 US ones. A British recipe that says a pint means 20 imperial fl oz.
