How Many Quarts in a Gallon?
There are 4 quarts in a gallon, in both US and UK measures. A US quart is 32 US fl oz (0.946 L); a UK quart is 40 imperial fl oz (1.137 L).
Gallons to quarts
| Gallons | Quarts |
|---|---|
| ¼ | 1 |
| ½ | 2 |
| 1 | 4 |
| 2 | 8 |
| 3 | 12 |
| 5 | 20 |
Going the other way: 1 quart = ¼ gallon, 2 quarts = ½ gallon.
US vs UK quarts
Both systems split the gallon into 4 quarts, so the count is the same. The sizes are not: a UK quart is 1.137 L, about 20% more than a US quart of 0.946 L. One UK quart is about 38.4 US fl oz, or 4.80 US cups.
The US also has a dry quart (1.101 L), sold for berries and produce; it is not the kitchen quart, and recipes never mean it.
Worked example: a pot of stock
A soup recipe makes 3 quarts of stock. 3 ÷ 4 = ¾, so it is ¾ gallon, and a 1-gallon pot holds it with a quart to spare. Each quart is 2 pints or 4 cups: see how many cups in a quart.
